Memorable 50-mile ride
   Atlantic Canada Trail Riding Association (ACTRA) member Russlyn Patriquin-Dyke along with her pit-crew husband David and her 11-year-old part-Arab mare Addy, travelled at the end of October to Myles Standish State Park in Carver, Massachusetts, to compete in the Flatlanders 50-mile endurance race. The park offered varied terrain and beautiful scenery making for a memorable ride.

It takes a team to launch a book

    Jen Marsden Hamilton of Windsor, Nova Scotia, is clearly thrilled to have her first copy of her book, A Jump Ahead: From Basics to Big Jumps, finally in her hands.  She slides her hand across the spine of this beautifully designed book of training exercises, laughs and says, “Look it will stand up on a real book shelf. It even has a table of contents.”

One Hot Krymsun

    The Canadian Bred Horse of the Year Award for 2016 went to a horse bred and born in Atlantic Canada. The Equine Canada Award, given to a horse that holds an outstanding national and/or international performance record that has helped to enhance the reputation and visibility of Canadian-bred horses, went to One Hot Krymsun, a 1999 Quarter Horse stallion bred by Herb Best and foaled at Krymsun Farms in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Foaling prediction technology wins grand prize

    It’s foaling season in the horse world, meaning many a late night for mare owners watching and waiting for new babies to arrive. Pinpointing exactly when a mare will foal has always been a guessing game. New Brunswick equestrian Lisa Pfister aims to change that. Pfister’s company Pfera has topped an impressive list of applicants to become the 2017 provincial grand prize winner in the N.B. Innovation Foundation (NBIF) Breakthru competition.

Celebrating the Canadian Horse

    Brilliant fall colours, loaded apple trees, and crispness in the air are all horse and human delights. Such was the scene on Oct. 1, when the Canadian Horse Breeders Association (Atlantic District), which celebrates all things related to the Canadian Horse, got together for their Demonstration Day and AGM at Colette and Sterling Gates’ farm in New Ross, Nova Scotia.

Maritime Equestrians lose an outstanding couple

    The Maritime horse community lost a wonderful couple in September with the passing of Jean and Elliott Bridges of Douglas, New Brunswick. Jean and Elliott set the bar high. Jean showed us how to be competitive without losing sight of what friendship and good sportsmanship mean. Elliott, ever-present as her moral support and pit crew, as well as a valued volunteer at so many events, was a wonderful husband to Jean.

Maritime youth learn dressage in Florida

    Four dressage riders from the Maritimes participated in a Youth Mentorship Program to give young riders, between the ages of 16 and 21, access to the knowledge and expertise of Canada’s top dressage athletes in Wellington, Florida. Sydney Sacre, 19, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Alyssa Gaudet, 17, of Memramcook, New Brunswick, and Martha Moore, 17, and Maggie Zinck, 21, of Fredericton, N.B.

Maritime riders awarded Jump Canada Bursaries

    For the fourth year in a row, two Maritime riders have been recognized for their impressive achievement in equestrian sport while maintaining a high level of commitment to their education. Erin Cecchetto, 17, of Brooklyn, Nova Scotia, and Campbell Legere, 14, of Hammonds Plains, N.S., are two of only five riders across the country to receive the 2015 Jump Canada Youth Bursary, in the amount of $2,000 each.
